Journey through The Gold Rush Trail
Length -
Following the path of the Fraser River up to the Cariboo Plateau and Mountains, this diverse countryside was once Gold country.
The Gold Rush Trail follows the path of prospectors who came in search of adventure and wealth; today, the Barkerville Historic Town recounts the past in a recreated 1860s boomtown. Throughout the area, spirit of adventure remains, and outdoor adventure activities abound.
Scenic Highway 1 through the dramatic Fraser Canyon leads to the open spaces of the Cariboo Plateau. Route 97 is the main north-south route through the region, but visitors will want to linger along the many lakes and at the ranches that stretch to the east. Route 24 is known as “The Fishing Highway” with plenty of lakeside resorts to visit.
The Cariboo is a popular destination for guest ranches and fishing vacations, as well as multi-day paddles on the Bowron Lake or Turner Lake canoe circuits. Alternatively, you can hit the open road by car or RV, stopping along the way at the ranching town Clinton, riverside Quesnel, or frontier city Williams Lake.
Visitors to British Columbia can arrive by air, road, rail, or ferry.
